Thermally Conductive Structural Adhesive-For Battery Cell Bond-With 8MPa

GLPOLY XK-D20 is a epoxy modified themally conductive structural adhesive with 2.0W/mK thermal conductivity. Comparing polyurethane based adhesives, GLPOLY XK-D20 provides more excellent physical property and reliability.

Lots of thermally conductive structural adhesives flooded the market, suppliers claimed that their products provided a high thermal conductivity and strong bonding strength. It is responsible to say that it’s not true according to verification. Most of competitive products were epoxy based and polyurethane based.  The epoxy based products provided strongth bonding strength, but the thermal conductivity is about 1.0W/mK.  And to PU based products, it could provides 2.0W/mK thermal conductivity, but bonding strength would be low than 5MPa, this was not enough for battery cell bond. Based on our demonstration, modified epoxy would be the best solution with high thermal performance and high bonding strength. GLPOLY had invested a lot of resource to develop thermally conductive structural adhesives for two years. After hundreds of test and adjustment, it showed up.

Last March, a chief engineer from a vessel company consulted me about thermally conductive structural adhesives. He was suffering from lack of high performance thermally conductive structural adhesive for battery cell bond and heat transfer. The product he wanted should provide both high thermal and high bonding strength. After reviewing his design requirements, I undertood what exactly he wanted. I recommended XK-D20 thermally conductive structural adhesive. This material suited filling 1-2mm gap thickness, and cured in 6-24 hours and provided 8MPa bonding strength. Generally, XK-D20 was ideal for this application.

After three-month test, GLPOLY XK-D20 thermally conductive structural adhesive emerged as the best one with high thermal performance, high bonding strength and proper viscosity by comparing with five competitive products. GLPOLY XK-D20 was introduced into supply system for trial production. Now customer has assembled 600 battery packs for trial production.

GLPOLY thermally conductive structural adhesive XK-D20 is ideal for applications where a strong bonding strength and effective heat transfer are required, providing proven reliability under extreme temperature cycling and shock. It eliminates the need of mechanical fasten, improving thermal contact. This material was compatible with high volume, automated dispense process, eliminating time consuming hand assembly, reducing installation cost.
