Thermally Conductive Structural Adhesives Designed For EV Battery Cell Bond

Service life and performance of Battery pack are affected by temperature seriously, engineers are working towards controlling the service temperature while enhancing performance and service life.

Thermal gap pad and thermal gap filler are widely used in cell-module-pack battery, with the advent of “cell to pack” battery in these years, a new material with new property is urgently required, for instance, strong bond strength is needed besides thermally conductive. For achieving this goal, GLPOLY has developed a new material---modified epoxy based thermally conductive structural adhesives superceding existing PU based products.

One year ago, a soft pack battery manufacturer consulted us about thermally conductive structural adhesives for battery cell bond. He asked if we could supply polyurethane based thermally conductive adhesive. Acutally, we were able to offer this material, but we recommended the modified epoxy thermally conductive structural adhesive XK-D12L instead. Why? We had validated the reliability of PU based thermally conductive adhesive by accelerated high temperature ageing test, performances would attenuated by 40% in four years. PU adhesives were never a good solution for EV battery cell bond. Customer said he wanted to test this new product after studying the contrast experiment report between GLPOLY XK-D12L thermally conductive structural adhesive and another PU based product, actually he had realized the detects of PU thermally conductive adhesives.

The validation of XK-D12L thermally conductive structural adhesive lasted for one years, temperature of battery pack was within the range of design requirement, performance attenuation was less than 7%. Now trial production is coming to a close, according to feedback of trial status it’s just a matter of time for mass production.
