What kind of thermal interface material is 3M 5590H? Many customers are not well-directed to select alternatives because they don’t understand the materials. Now we learn something about 3M 5590H and what alternatives we can get.

3M 5590H is a acrylic based, thermally condcutive, eletrically isolating, silicone free polymer specially designed for silicone sensitive applications. It is a medium thermal performance silicone free thermal pad with 3.0W/mK of thermal conductivity, certainly, it is good for most of normal consumer electronics, but another vital element-thermal resistance must be taken into account. Specimen in 1.0mm thick was tested in ASTM D5470, we got 0.7℃in2/W of thermal resistance. It is a high value compared to traditional thermal silicone pad, of course heat transfer will be affected.

GLPOLY developed silicone free thermal interface materials for many year, distinguishing from other manufaturers, GLPOLY used a different material. For example, 3M 5590H is acrylic based, it has a similar performance to GLPOLY XK-PN30. But GLPOLY XK-PN30 silicone free thermal pad provides a lower thermal resistance, it is just 0.2℃in2/W. Obviously, we can tell GLPOLY XK-PN30 silicone free thermal pad provides more excellent thermal performance.

3M 5590H’s advantage is excellent electrical insulation. its dielectric strength is 33kV/mm, it exceeds most of similar products. But normal consumer electronics, 10kV/mm of dielectric strength would be good enough.

We can draw conclusion that GLPOLY XK-PN30 silicone free thermal pad can replace 3M 5590H completely. We can not depend on brand alone, the most important is good performance.
