Thermal putty gel is springing up vigorously these years, thermal silicone grease is a classic thermal interface material. Many people can not tell the difference between them, because they are paste. We figure out the difference between them.

Firstly, the application method is different. Thermal putty gel has high viscosity, it’s been done in vacuum circumstance, and packed in syringe.  Thermal putty gel is suitable for automated process.

For the thermal silicone grease, the formula, process and package are different from thermal gel’s, the regular application method for silicone thermal grease is screen print. It is a simple and cost effective solution, also it can be applied automatically.

Life cycle is different for both paste. Thermal putty gel never dry out, it can be compressed infinitely, the service time can be almost 10 years. It deflects under low compressive force, decreasing stress on component thus decreasing component failures.

For thermal silicone grease has the shortest life cycle in thermal management products family. After half a year, it will dry out and turn into powder, the thermal performance is terminated.

Thirdly, thermal grease has a lower viscosity than thermal putty gel, it may drip off or self leveling in application, polluting other components. We should select proper thermal management materials according to the actual design and applications.
