Stickiness is a frequently asked question when customer inquiry thermally conductive tape, the author edits this FAQ for customers selecting thermal tape easily.
Is thermal tape XK-TN08 self adhesive? Is it double-sided self adhesive? Literally, thermal double–sided tape has adhesion on to both sides. Thermal tape is a composite of acrylic filling with ceramics powder. It has high thermal performance and electrically insolating properties and other features such as flexibility, compressibility, conformability and stickiness.
Is the bonding strong? Thermal tape is self adhesive, it can fix parts replacing screw mount and achieving thermally conductive effectively.
The bonding strength is effected by several elements, such as handling mode, application stress, temperature and time, the bonding strength can not be judged by touch by hand, 1) keep the interface dry and clean, 2) after stick the thermal tape to interface, apply stress to it slightly, 3) the stickiness has two phases: initial stickiness and constant stickiness. At room temperature, the stickiness will become stronger gradually in 72 hours, 4) the stickiness relates to external temperature. Increasing the temperature properly can make the bonding strength maximum. It is suitable for application where requires strong binding and eliminate mechanical fasten.
If the stickiness is not enough, can we increase the glue to thermal tape? The glue will increase thermal resistance and decrease thermal performance apparently.
What thermal conductivity can it be made? Usually, the highest thermal conductivity of thermal tape is 1.5W/mK, this is what the most famous thermal tape manufacturer—3M can achieve, of course, this is a special case, most of thermal tapes provide a thermal conductivity of 0.4W/mK—1.2W/mK.
