If you took the computer cooling system apart, you could find that thermal grease was applied between CPU and heatsink in most of computers. Why does thermal grease take the biggest market share in thermal interface materials family?
There are several features, good flowability, thin boldline thickness and ultra low thermal resistance, these characteristics will make thermal grease fullfil high thermal performance. But at the meantime, we can find some faults on thermal grease. A lot of silicone oil, high volatility, dry up under high temperature, we need to maintain the cooling system once a year.
Now we use another material called thermal gel, which has some feaures in common with thermal grease. For example, paste status, low thermal resistance, thin bondline thickness, these features will make thermal performance optimized.
The most important is that thermal gel eliminates defects as thermal grease’s. Thermal gel will neither drip off nor pump out under pressure, it’s better for operator to control dispensing. Also, thermal gel will not dry up under high temperatrure, you don’t need to worry about maintainance in three or five years, offering more excellent reliability.
Thermal gel is syringe packaged, it’s designed to eliminate time consuming hand assembly, decreasing cost and reducing purchasing complexity. It requires no mixing, providing design flexibility.
