More and more engineers have started to pay more attention to thermally conductive structural adhesives for EV battery cell bond. At present, polyurethane(PU) thermally conductive adhesives are the most common material used for structural bond. But it is not the reliable solution due to significant performance degradation.
GLPOLY abandoned this technology and developed a new one-modified epoxy technology. After three years of development and experiment, GLPOLY launches XK-D series of modified epoxy thermally conductive structural adhesives. XK-D series thermally conductive structural adhesives exhibits better thermal performance and reliability in simulation test.
In April 2021, an engineer from an automaker contacted GLPOLY, consulting us about thermally conductive structural adhesives for CTP battery pack battery cell bond, requiring good thermal perfomance, strong bonding strength and good electrical insulation etc. He selected some thermally conductive structural adhesives from famous suppliers in China, certainly, these products were polyurethane based. He carried out extreme temperature cycling and shock from minus 40 to 150 Celsius degree for 2000 hours. He made a test on specimens for thermal performance and bonding strength after aging test. He told me he was really shocked by this report. Comparing to the specification, the performances such as thermal performance and bonding strength were decreased by 30%. This was really redicules to auto applications,
This was not a special case. According to GLPOLY’s simulation test, performance of polyurethane based thermally conductive structural adhesives would decrease 40% at least after high temperature aging test at 150 Celsius degree for 500 hours. This was reality. GLPOLY XK-D series thermally conductive structural adhesives just had a deviation of 5%. We predict that modified epoxy thermally conductive structural adhesives would be widely used in auto application instead of pulyurethane adhesives.
Now, GLPOLY thermally conductive structural adhesives are in trial production in Lixiang Motor, AIWAYS Motor and LISHEN Battery. We will update timely feedback.
